2001 VW Beetle. 1.8 Turbo. AC blows hot air only. Freon appears that it has high PSI. Any ideas?

Hello V-Dub Fanatics!

Ok, so I haven't worried about this because it is winter now, but last summer my A/C stopped working. Here is what we did:

- A/C only blows hot air.
- Don't hear motor noise when I turn A/C on like I used to.
- Bought canister of freon with gauge.
- Tested pressure before adding more freon and PSI was off the charts.
- PSI does not decrease when A/C is turned on.
- WE DID NOT ADD ANY FREON

Any ideas of what we can do to fix this? My fiancé is pretty savvy when it comes to fixing cars, can basically do just about everything from the ground up. However, if we have to go to a shop to have it discharged, etc. can anyone give me a price range?
