94 Jetta doesn't start. Has spark&gas injector has fuel supply.will sometimes start,then stall o

will restart sometimes after trying every couple minutes for maybe an hour or so .Is it timing or a sensor malfunction? 1.8L gas engine .

I would first begin by putting the crank at top dead center and checking that the cam gear is lined up where it is supposed to be. Are the injectors actually ticking when cranking? Check by putting a screwdriver to an injector and having a friend crank the engine while you put your ear against the screwdriver handle to use it as a stethoscope.
