What is the loud noise when coming to a stop?

When I'm coming to a stop sometimes there is a loud banging noise from the rear of my car. It seems to happen on longer trips. What could it be?

What year and model VW do you have Olivia? Does it sound like it's coming from the brakes or the trunk?

It's an 04 Beetle turbo.Trunk or back window. Sort of like somebody slapping it.
